The Priests talk about the meaning of ‘Harmony’

Following the release of ‘Harmony’, we asked The Priests to discuss the meaning behind their album title.

Stay tuned for more on our exclusive chat with The Priests, arriving here on their official site over the Christmas and New Year period.

What is the meaning of harmony to you?
Martin, ‘Harmony essentially for me is about - in the busy, busy world we all live in - trying to find a little bit of stillness, of peace. Maybe this harmony will enable us to be at peace with ourselves and with the world, and maybe be a bit more alert to the beauty of the world and the beauty of people, and God obviously as well in our lives. All of that is what harmony means for me and what we wanted to convey in the album title - It can be a struggle to achieve it but keep trying!’

David, ‘Harmony means to me to blend and get together in a positive way. Unity, togetherness and peace.’

What do you feel is the inspiration for the new album?
David, ‘Again, it’s music that we love, songs we wanted to record. We feel it’s music that people will also love. There’s some music that people are familiar with already, some real favourites like ‘Amazing Grace’ and ‘You’ll Never Walk Alone’. That one was very popular at the concert we performed at earlier in the year, so we put it on the album.’

Martin, ‘I would say it is essentially our love of music and I think that we enjoy the singing very much indeed. We enjoy the blend, and the harmony somehow reflects the blend. It’s like a fermentation process that’s been going on for 35 years. It’s great that we’ve been able to open up the repertoire even more. We’ve had to learn new pieces but all of these will hopefully lift people’s spirits. Harmony, I hope, will be a title that people will latch onto.’

Do you have a message for the fans?

Eugene, ‘We hope that they like the album. We’re thrilled to have had the opportunity to make a second album. We never dreamt that would happen. We got to write a song of our own, so ‘King of Kings’ is written by ourselves and it’s ideal for choral singing. We hope the fans will like it and might like to sing it.’

Harmony is a lovely choice of word and most befitting . It does quiet the mind and uplift the spirit, and don’t worry Fr.Eugene we do sing along with it, although it is better if you do not hear us ! I hope you will keep your hand at composing, for King of Kings is beautiful and so tuneful.

Dear Fathers, Thank you for sharing the gift of yourselves this Advent, with the Church and the world. Its wonderful in this Year of the Priests.
I read with interest your interview with Sony reproduced in the local Catolic paper especially about the special project in Thailand and neighbouring Cambodia / Laos.
Enroute to these places in 2010 before OR after will you bless the Church in Malaysia with a concert and ALL for Charity…..
(and for some much needed rest)

Frs., I’ve read the lyrics to “Hail Bright Cecilia” on “Sing for the Morning’s Joy” by Cappella Caeciliana, and wondered if the word “Harmony” subconsciously stayed with you from there: “...Great patroness of us and Harmony…”  Sorry for such a belated comment.  Still listening to and loving all of your music!

This is a beautiful album and in some ways I like it more than the first and Mozart’s Ave Verum Corpus is one of my all time favourite pieces of misic. However just one small point is that the words to ‘King of Kings’ wasn’t published in the liner notes and all the others were.  I can’t quite catch all the words but would love to have followed them in the notes.

I wonder if The Priests would consider singing that beautiful Charles Gounod song ‘Oh Divine Redeemer’ sometime.  I think you would do that one beautifully as well. Keep recording, please!

Interesting conversation. The topic is very nice. It seems to me Harmony is different for people. I associate this word with sakura. I like films about Japan. I often find them at rapidshare SE http://rapidpedia.com . The monks there really live in harmony.
